Posted on 03/13/2026

East Street Elementary School in Hicksville is celebrating a wonderful literary achievement of two talented fourth grade students, Kora Kowalski and Maya Pestano. The two have recently been recognized as Young Writers and published in the anthology Spook Squad: Into The Shadows, part of the Young Writers Spook Squad series.

Kora Kowalski’s story, The Noise in the Woods, and Maya Pestano’s tale entitled, Skeletons, were selected for publication following their participation in the Young Writers national Spook Squad competition. The contest invites elementary age students to craft a “scary saga” an imaginative and suspenseful story told in 100 words or fewer.

Designed to inspire creativity and foster a love of literacy, the competition challenges young authors to use vivid language, descriptive detail, and originality to bring eerie ideas to life. Selected entries are compiled into a published anthology, celebrating the creativity and hard work of students across the country.
This recognition recognizes Kora and Maya’s individual talents as creative writers. Additionally, their accomplishment serves as an inspiration to their classmates and underscores the importance of encouraging young voices in storytelling.
“We are incredibly proud of our young authors,” said East Street Principal Joe Messana “Their willingness to share their creativity demonstrates their writing skills and wonderful imagination.”
